Jon McNaughton is a controversial artist, (well by American standards anyway), who frequently brings religion and politics into his painting. You can find him at his web site here.
His latest is on the subject of Obama, a man he clearly distrusts. “One Nation under socialism” depicts the President making a bonfire of the constitution.
Some don’t like it for the message. Others don’t feel it is the purpose of art to be political believing art’s place was best served by the likes of Norman Rockwell, dogs playing poker or boots filled with kittens. Others see McNaughton as being in the tradition of art of Germany before the war and thus headed off down a cul-de-sac. I just feel it beats a lot of the campaigning stuff we’ve seen so far.

Re the artwork – it’s a decent enough portrait of President Obama – but “one nation under socialism”? where does the artist get that idea, I wonder? Certainly not from any policies he has carried through or any advisers he has used in the past 3 and a half years. His words when campaigning did NOT follow through into actions.
If Obama is socialist (if only!) then I am Queen of Siam.
Thanks aquariecan, and I agree. Obama has certainly made a number of interesting consitutional moves in the last couple of years or so which most definately don’t feel “socialist”. If you decide to visit the artist’s web page (the link is in the body of the piece) there is a short 48 second video that reinforces where the artist is coming from. Clearly a very right wing tea party sort of place
Socialism as a term is too often just a frightener, a bogy man word to throw at your enemies, a word often used by the rich to decry those who might simply want a fairer more equitable division of the world.
