Don’t get too excited yet….

Then there were two.  With the grudged, wrenched withdrawal of Santorum all piqué and no kind words for Romney, the GOP field has finally cleared to reveal, as we all knew from the start, that the Republican party candidate is going to be Mitt Romney.  I mean do you really think that Ron Paul has much of a chance beyond a role as a voice for disgusted?  And as it is reported Newt’s cheques are bouncing it looks like his money has finally run out too.

So…where does this leave the presidential campaign?

Doubtless Romney has to be delighted he is there, all bar the shouting.  The Oligarchy have won this bit.  After the debates, primaries and swamping the media with advertising, all the other candidates failed, and the candidate with the strongest family links to the establishment has won through.  Mitt Romney our little Republican Oligarch is through to the big game.

The question now is” Will he win”?  Personally I doubt it.  Santorum ran an effective campaign given his limitations.  He was of working class background and a Catholic but he found a constituency in the party of homophobes and Evangelical right wingers willing to push his cause along.  His portrayal of himself as the candidate of the working and middle-class man, as opposed to Mitt being the “Rodney Rich-Pigg” 1% millionaire playboy of the Republicans may still haunt Mittens.  Along with Newt Santorum dragged Romney squealing all the while further and further right.   Romney now needs to recover the centre ground to win the bigger game against Obama.  And in the recovery of this Obama will make hay with his previous statements showing him flip-flopping from one issue to the next.

It promises to be a wonderfully dirty, horrid little campaign fuelled with more money than any of us will be able to remember.  No mutual caps on spending this year oh no sir.  Negative and expensive this will be the Billion Dollar Campaign and that in itself will be bad for democracy.  Why?  Because candidates are behoven to whoever pays them that’s why.

So, now we see 2012 as a good old fashioned Oligarch candidate against Oligarch candidate fight, and since Obama has the greater oligarch ancestry (albeit not by much) my bet is on this alone to carry him through.   For all the complaints of the “birther” lobby regarding Obama’s Kenyan ancestry, there is an almost deliberate ignoring, a blindness if you will to his blue blooded mother’s family which gives Barack common relations to both Presidents Bush, LBJ, Truman, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Hoover.  Far from being “just” some immigrant from Kenya’s child, Obama’s ancestry in America goes way back to one Robert Hudson who came to Jamestown in 1622.
