Old maps and prints are always a delight. And I have always been impressed at the quality and inventiveness of American graphic artists. So it is a real delight to find someone who takes such classic maps and prints which are already in the public domain and adds something to them to create strange alternate histories peopled by monsters, elder gods, Clhulhu, evil conquers and krakens, a style known as “piggyback” art. Matthew Buchholz has created a site Alternate Histories where you can find more. The above is Pittsburgh in the grip of the Zombie deaths, the one below a strange take on the statue of liberty and finally my favourite – a map of Washington DC menaced by that dark beast of the sludge known only as “The Perry”.
