If, as Enoch Powell would have us believe, all political careers are doomed to ultimately end in disappointment, then there is certainly much wailing and gnashing of teeth in the American political camps this week, as the fall-out from Iowa lands. Santorum is gone, Paul is gone, and Huckabee too.
But for sheer bathos, for undiluted emotional tugging on the heartstrings, for absolute cringworthiness – the sight of Jeb Bush welling up as he stood before a crowd of silent spectators in Hanover, New Hampshire last night begging them to “Clap, please clap” has to be the saddest thing I have seen in a long time of watching American Politics.
As an epitaph it is beyond satire.
Time to go son, time to go.
