Now I may be wrong but I’ll wager good money that those protesting about the concept that Black Lives Matter in the States, and those hitching a ride on the bandwagon intent on pulling down statues of people who long ago owned slaves, won’t be nearly as interested in finding the descendants of the black overseers on “dem dere ole plantations”. Nor will they be nearly as keen on pursuing the families of the black carpet-baggers, and collaborators who did very well at the expense of others of their race. Will Black Lives Matter condemn the black business men in the North that wouldn’t give freed Southern black men jobs after the Civil War? Will Black Lives Matter seek out the black African tribal leaders that led slave catching expeditions to snare their neighbours in the bush and drag them in chains to sell them on the shore to the crews from Liverpool and Bristol and Istanbul? Men to American slave fields, girls to Arab harems. Will they even admit that the entire slave enterprise was unviable without fully complicit black African involvement?
I doubt it. But I would love to hear that they intend to. Somehow, I doubt that these trendy. Leftie-liberal la-las will do anything other than run away from those truths.
It will be expensive, time-consuming, wholly useless and utterly stupid.
You know, what irks me most about Black Lives Matter’s ideas are not that they are ignoble, but that they are so Stupid. Stupid with a capital S. Stupid with a sense of self-serving grandstanding.
So, what then might Black Lives Matter do that I would find less daft?
Well BLM, you don’t have to go way back to find slavery and atrocities against your ‘own’ people, BLM.
Perhaps, and it’s just as a suggestion Black Lives Matter should sort out what black people are doing to black people on your mother continent of Africa. Because, what is happening there is in the horrid dirty here and now, and not the nicely tidied up past you inhabit. Please go check it out.
If you are looking for slavery to attack then looking in Africa today might be a good start. Here girl children are stolen from school by black men and raped or sold for profit (and rape). Good grief BLM ,instead of worrying about injustices a century and a half old will you stand against slave auctions in Africa today? If you want to attack slavery – will you condemn the religion that says this is acceptable? At least Christianity has moved away from the biblical teaching that once gave a cover for slavery.
It is a terrible and sad truth that slavery is still rife and happening today. That women are bought and sold by black men in Africa today as if the 21st Century does not exist, and all in the name of some Religion Of Peace or in the more honest name of War.
We even know where and how many.
Mali still has an estimated 200,000 slaves today. The French Empire tried to outlaw the practise but the indigenous black population have continued the practise. Will BLM support Temedi in its fight against these injustices. Nope, thought not. Might be a bit risky. Some really nasty people contemporary slavers are.
Mauritania. Here slavery is still deeply rooted with perhaps 43,000 according to Amnesty and up to 140,000 by others. That’s 10 to 20% of the population according to a US Department of State Report back in 2011. BLM how many slaves in America? None that’s right it was abolished.
Then there are Chad and the D R Congo and Ethiopia (despite the efforts of the Italians).
We could add Ghana, Togo and Benin. How about Madagascar or Niger?.
Sudan has seen a heavy resurgence of slavery since 1983. Well its so easy and profitable and the lefties in the West just don’t want to know. Unlike the evangelical Christian politicians of the nineteenth century who fought so hard for so long to see this vile practice eliminated.
Best of all is Libya. There they have slave markets that are not even discrete. They are held in the open, car parks, garages even public squares.
Will Black Lives Matter ever come out and condemn this present slavery? Will they work for its eradication today? If you are supporting BLM today will you lead that charge? Would you devote your name and time to this cause? Or is your condemnation only for the white descendants of slave owners dead now for over a century? Is your vision that bloody limited?
Because there is no need to seek descendants for these monsters in Africa today. These monsters live right here, right now. If any need your ire and attack surely surely BLM it is for these slave-masters?
Or are you frightened that such a stance would be personally dangerous? These latter day slavers are not nice soft middle class white people they are hardened bastards who would kill as soon as look.
Better BLM that we all, black, white Christian, Islamic, Jewish, whatever, learn from these horrors and instead of raking over our own pasts, long settled use the lessons to make certain this evil does not rise again anywhere in the world. Or is your vision not that wide BLM?
Nope thought not.
