the book

Oh look here’s a quick buck being made on the back of piles of dead victims, thousands in mourning, and God knows how many who lost their businesses, or were thrown out of a job.

Political whitewash AND a grubby money raking scheme? Why it could only be Andrew Cuomo.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is bringing out his latest book “American Crisis: Leadership lessons from the COVID -19 Pandemic” in nice time for the American Election. It would need to be good mind, his last “All Things Possible: Setbacks and Success in Politics and Life” published in 2014 bombed, selling only 3,000. Mind you the boy got $700,000 out of the deal.

This tome is about how Gov Cuomo faced up to the all but insurmountable challenges of running New York in a pandemic and (of course) overcame them spectacularly. It is a shame therefor that Governor Cuomo’s response to the coronavirus pandemic has been found to fall short on several fronts. It all makes the book appear a cynical exercise in blame shifting and arse covering.

Remember way back in March 16th 2020 President Trump issued stay-at-home guidelines? Good he did something. But New York’s Governor did not order her lockdown until March 22— then almost a whole week later, and days after San Francisco, and three days after the rest of California. A bit tardy you might suggest. So by the time Cuomo finally took the bull by the horns and chose to finally shut the state down, coronavirus cases were out of control, “with the number of confirmed cases at 15,000, doubling every three or four days.” He failed to flatten the curve.

Not the swift decisive action one would have hoped to see from a potential Democrat Presidential Candidate for next time round.

Cuomo (as always) seemed more interested in public confrontations with President Trump than actually doing the day job. In fact, He was either complacent, ill informed, ignorant or just plain stupid when he infamously requested a huge number of ventilators – some 30,000-40,000 – to deal with the pandemic as he saw it. When the federal government told him they did not have that many he archly came back with the line to Trump “You pick the 26,000 people who are going to die.” Oh dear, oh dear.

Naturally, you are ahead of me in realising that New York never did need more than 6000 ventilators to tide them over the peak pandemic. Indeed, New York ended up giving away the extra ventilators to other states.

That was bad but still just posturing. But Cuomo’s next coronavirus response will be the one most remembered, and the one to taint his career for ever. Cuomo will most likely be remembered for his deadly nursing home policy.

Appallingly, on March 25, Cuomo ordered nursing homes to accept patients regardless of their coronavirus status. Even then at that early stage it was well known that the elderly were more vulnerable to the virus. Taking elderly patients who tested positive, and shoving them in nursing homes simply to clear beds out of hospitals started a wild fire of infection in the single most vulnerable sector of his population. Even Cuomo noted it was “like fire through dry grass.”

Never mind Andy lad, you just keep battering away no one will notice. As he defended this homicidal policy during a daily briefing, he said Nursing homes “don’t have a right to object. That is the rule and that is the regulation and they have to comply with that.” Cuomo reversed the order, but they were still dead, the damage had been done. Nursing home patients represent only .46 ( yes that’s point) percent of the United States population but are 43 percent of all coronavirus deaths. Cuomo single-handedly enabled a massive outbreak in New York nursing homes and then tried to cover it up.

Cuomo merely dismissed objectors with a high handled wave of a patrician hand. “Older people,” he pontificated “vulnerable people, are going to die from this virus. That is going to happen despite whatever you do. Because with all our progress as a society, we can’t keep everyone alive.”

This ghastly work, is pushed as revealing behind the scenes stuff. God it even includes “a clear game plan for the nation” Seriously, some people have no shame.
As a delightful coda Cuomo gave us a little Trumpism on Monday during the Dem’s Video Convention where he called COVID, which originated in Wuhan, China “the European Virus”.

Not one for the Christmas best sellers list I fear.
